THANK YOU
11/09/2011
Thank you so much for all of your support throughout this campaign. While the results didn't turn out the way we wanted last night, we ran a tough, spirited campaign that we are extremely proud of.
We started this campaign with a small list of friends and family and have grown that by leaps and bounds. We knocked on more than 30,000 doors, made more than 10,000 phone calls and raised more than $350,000 from more than 450 unique donors. For a first-time candidate, I'd say that's pretty impressive.
I want to say a special thanks to Senator Mark Warner, Governor Tim Kaine, Terry McAuliffe, Senator Mark Herring, Senator Chuck Colgan, Senator Charlie Waddell, Senator John Chichester, Senator Russ Potts, AOBA, NVTC TechPAC, NV/R PAC, DAAR, PWAR, VEA, LEA, Virginia AFL-CIO, Mid-Atlantic Laborers Council, NARAL Pro-Choice VA, Virginia NOW, VPFF, VALCV, VA Sierra Club, the Washington Post and Loudoun Times-Mirror for their support in this campaign. For each of you to give your public support to my campaign means a great deal to me.
And finally, I couldn't have done this without the support of my best friend and beautiful wife Ashley and our daughter Bella. A very special thank you to our wonderful campaign staff, volunteers and all of our family and friends - old and new - for their support throughout this campaign.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Shawn Mitchell

Solutions vs. Rhetoric
Mitchell Offers Real Solutions While Career Politician Black Covers Up His Record
11/08/2011
Ashburn, VA - Twice recently, small business owner Shawn Mitchell squared off against career politician Delegate Dick Black in a discussion about the future direction of the 13th District. It is clear that Mitchell is the only candidate who will go to Richmond with real solutions to jump-start the economy and get Virginia moving forward again.
"Dick Black Hung Up On Me"
Black Ignores Calls from Concerned Citizens
11/07/2011
Ashburn, VA - Last night, the Shawn Mitchell for State Senate campaign released a call to voters in the 13th District from Omar Samaha, brother of Virginia Tech victim, Reema Samaha. Samaha reached out to Dick Black via phone on October 31st but when he began asking questions, Black hung up on him. This call is in addition to Shawn Mitchell asking career politician Dick Black, in a candidates forum in Prince William county on October 20th, to release his answers to the extreme Virginia Citizens Defense League survey, which Black has refused to do for more than two weeks.
Statement on Dick Black's Frivolous Health Care Lawsuit
11/04/2011
Ashburn, VA - Dominic Gabello, Campaign Manager for the Shawn Mitchell for State Senate campaign released the following statement in response to career politician Dick Black's frivolous lawsuit on Health Care Reform.
"The same Dick Black who opposed criminalizing certain kinds of Rape, tried to make it illegal for adult women to obtain birth control, and who Republican leaders have called an embarrassment, isn't even waiting until he gets elected to waste taxpayer money on his personal agenda. Black has backed millions in cuts to schools, but wants to spend money on lawyers to advance a frivolous lawsuit. Just imagine what he'll do if he's elected. Jobs should be Richmond's first priority, not Dick Black's extreme agenda."

We strive hard every day to provide a quality service and meet all of our customers' needs.
"I hope to take my experiences as a small business owner to the State Senate so we can implement policies that will help jumpstart our economy and get Virginians working again."

ICYMI: Washington Post: Va. Democrats portray Dick Black as extreme for new GOP-leaning Senate district

Va. Democrats portray Dick Black as extreme for new GOP-leaning Senate district
RICHMOND — Dick Black once questioned whether a husband commits rape if he forces his wife to have sex. The former member of the House of Delegates introduced a bill to ban gays from adopting children. He voted to limit access to birth control.
But the Republican who opposes abortion rights is probably best known on Capitol Square for sending plastic pink models of fetuses to lawmakers as they prepared to vote on an abortion bill.
Shawn Mitchell, a Democrat opposing Black in next week's election for state Senate, is using Black's record to show he's extreme for even a new Republican-leaning district in Loudoun and Prince William counties.
Democrats have spent months employing a similar strategy across the state, hoping the conservative crop of Republicans running in this election gives them the edge they need to hold their thin majority in the Senate.
"Having served . . . with Dick Black, I saw up close how zealously out of touch he is with what middle-class families need,'' said Brian Moran, a former legislator who is chair of the Democratic Party of Virginia. "His obsession with divisive social issues won't create a single job, won't get a single commuter out of traffic and won't put a single teacher back in our classrooms."

Video Release: Dick Black Fails Virginia Women
Career Politician Doesn't Stand Up Against Spousal Rape
11/01/2011
Ashburn, VA - Today, the Shawn Mitchell for State Senate campaign released a web video "How Out of Touch Is Dick Black?" highlighting career politician Dick Black's extreme position on spousal rape. You can view the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvRb4NtrRVQ
On February 7, 2002, while the Virginia General Assembly was debating HB 488, Dick Black took to the floor and said, "I do not know how on a earth you can validly get a conviction of a husband/wife rape where they are living together, sleeping in the same bed, she's in a nightie, and so forth, there is no injury, no separation or anything."
"Dick Black has an extreme agenda that would put Virginia on a reckless, and far right trajectory," said Mitchell Campaign Manager Dominic Gabello. "Sadly, Dick Black's refusal to stand up to spousal rape is only the tip of the ice berg when it comes to his rigid, radical ideology. Black has voted to block birth control for adult women, allow dangerous firearms on school property, and criminalize safe abortion procedures.
"No reasonable person believes that a man can force himself on his spouse, with no legal repercussions. Unfortunately Dick Black is so radical that he sees nothing legally wrong with spousal rape. Voters in Northern Virginia need to know the consequences of Black's extreme beliefs."

Day 9: The Dick Black Disappearing Act
Career Politician Still in Hiding
10/29/2011
Ashburn, VA - Career politician Dick Black got into the Halloween spirit early this year and has been dressing as Houdini for the last 9 days, busy attempting to pull off his famous disappearing act. Dick Black not only wont release his extreme VCDL survey but now he won't give the voters of the 13th District a chance to see him debate Shawn Mitchell.
"It's bad enough he is hiding his VCDL survey on whether he favors guns in schools, bars, libraries and gutting the Virginia State Police background check," said Mitchell Campaign Manager Dominic Gabello. "But now that he is hiding from a television debate with Shawn during the last 10 days of the campaign is just despicable.
"Dick Black can't defend his failed record for Loudoun and Prince William families, so now he is hiding from the voters. The voters of the 13th District are smart enough to see through Dick Black's lies and smears and will see through his disappearing act. They deserve a Senator who will be open and honest with them and Dick Black fails to live up to that standard."

Day 8: Mitchell to Participate in One-Man Debate
Career Politician Dick Black Continues to Hide Extreme Views from Voters
10/28/2011
Ashburn, VA - Next Thursday, November 3rd, at 10 am, Shawn Mitchell will participate in a one-man debate on NewsTalk with Bruce Depuyt on NewsChannel8. Career politician Dick Black has ignored requests to participate in this debate. For the last 8 days, Black has also refused to release his answers to the extreme VCDL gun survey.
"It's just like career politician Dick Black to play hide-and-seek games with the voters this close to Election Day," said Mitchell Campaign Manager Dominic Gabello. "Dick Black has gone underground for 8 days now to hide his extreme views on birth control for adult women and cutting funding for our public schools from the voters of the 13th Senate District. We know that Delegate Black is afraid of what real voters have to say - that's why he refuses to debate Shawn and release his extreme VCDL survey."
A tele-town hall with AARP was originally scheduled for Wednesday, October 19th, and Delegate Black refused to participate. The same tele-town hall was rescheduled for Thursday, October 27th, and Dick Black refused to participate again. NewsChannel8 approached both the Mitchell campaign and the Black campaign more than a week ago to schedule next week's television debate, but Delegate Black refused once again.
Gabello stated, "Shawn is prepared to have an open, honest discussion of each of their records and their plans for the 13th Senate District with Dick Black anytime, anywhere before Election Day. Delegate Black simply refuses to defend his failed record for Loudoun and Prince William families and the smears and outright lies he's made about Shawn during this campaign. The voters deserve better."

Day 7: The Search for Dick Black Continues
Career Politician Continues Hiding From Voters
10/27/2011
Ashburn, VA - We're now a full week into the disappearing act of career politician Dick Black. He not only hasn't released his answers to the extreme Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) survey, but now he's not participating in a tele-town hall with seniors.
"With Halloween fast approaching, the ghosts of Dick Black's extreme record are starting to catch up to him," said Mitchell Campaign Manager, Dominic Gabello. "Dick Black's extreme views on education and birth control are notorious, but its his views on guns that voters are still searching for. Voters want to know - are Dick Black's views on guns just as extreme as the VCDL, who want to allow guns in schools, bars, libraries and to gut the Virginia State Police Background check system?
"Dick Black can hide from seniors tonight but he can't hide from the voters who are demanding he release his VCDL survey and finally show us how extreme his views on guns really are."

ICYMI: Loudoun Times-Mirror Endorses Shawn Mitchell
Mitchell Has " A thoughtful and common-sense approach"

Loudoun Times-Mirror

A veteran and small business entrepreneur, Shawn Mitchell (D) is one of the most exciting new candidates this election season. With a thoughtful and common-sense approach to nearly every issue, Mitchell is an excellent choice for the 13th District. While former Delegate Dick Black (R) has campaigned on economic and transportation issues, we remain concerned that his outspoken and extreme views on social issues will prove too distracting from the more pressing issues facing Loudoun.

Career Politician Continues to Hide Extreme Views from Voters
10/26/2011
Ashburn, VA - We're now into the 6th day of the disappearing act of career politician Dick Black who is hiding his extreme views from voters in Loudoun and Prince William counties. In response, the Mitchell campaign released a video, "What is Dick Black Hiding," asking voters in the 13th District to call Dick Black and tell him to release his VCDL survey.
You can view the video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIoaq7xxKyw
"If Dick Black was proud enough to tout the endorsement of the extreme Virginia Citizens Defense League during his primary," said Mitchell Campaign Manager Dominic Gabello, "Why is he hiding his answers to their survey now? The voters should call Dick Black and ask him to release his survey and if he believes in the extreme positions of the VCDL and having guns in bars, schools, libraries and gutting the Virginia State Police Background check.

Extreme Views are Nothing New To Career Politician
10/25/2011
Ashburn, VA - Career politician Dick Black has continued to hide from the voters of Loudoun and Prince William for a 5th straight day and has yet to release his answers to the extreme Virginia Citizens Defense League Survey.
"Why is career politician Dick Black continuing to hide from voters," asked Mitchell Campaign Manager Dominic Gabello. "If Delegate Black really believes in the VCDL and their efforts to allow guns in schools, bars, libraries and wanting to do away with the Virginia State Police Background check then he should be honest with the voters and release his survey.
"Voters already knew about Dick Black's extreme views on birth control and public education and his failed record for Loudoun and Prince William families, now its time they learn about his extreme views on this important public safety issue. Delegate Black release your survey now."

Former Senator Waddell Endorses Mitchell for Senate
Says Mitchell Will Work Across Party Lines
10/25/2011
Ashburn, VA - Former State Senator Charles "Charlie" Waddell endorsed Shawn Mitchell for the State Senate today.
"I had the honor of representing Loudoun and Fairfax Counties in the Senate of Virginia for 26 years and learned to work across party lines to get bills passed and things accomplished such as the Route 28 Transportation District.
"I know my friend Shawn Mitchell will be a like minded legislator and I am pleased to endorse him for election to the state senate on November 8th.
"Shawn has what it takes as a moderate businessman to hit the ground running in Richmond. His opponent is way too extreme for Loudoun and Prince William Counties and the voters understood that when they voted him out of the State House of Delegates a few years back."
Waddell was a Senator from 1972 until he retired in 1998. He was chairman of the Transportation Committee from 1984 - 1998. You can read his full endorsement at www.ShawnforSenator.com.
"I'm very honored to have Senator Waddell's support in this campaign," said Shawn Mitchell. "We are facing serious challenges in the next General Assembly session and it's going to take bi-partisan support to solve them. I look forward to going to Richmond, rolling up my sleeves and getting the peoples work done. It's imperative that we jumpstart our economy and get Virginians back to work. It's also time for the career politicians that are in Richmond to finally stop passing the buck and bring us some much needed transportation relief - families and businesses in Virginia can't wait any longer."

Cites Mitchell's Focus on Creating Jobs in Support
10/24/2011
Ashburn, VA - Today, former Republican Senator and Independent candidate for Governor Russ Potts endorsed Shawn Mitchell for State Senate.
"I'm proud to endorse Shawn Mitchell for the State Senate. He will make a great Senator.
"Shawn will focus on jobs, jobs, jobs and our economic challenges not on abortion and a divisive social agenda. A Senator Mitchell will work across the aisle to create jobs and support public education.
"I represented Loudoun County in the Senate and I know that Loudoun is mainstream, middle of the road and expects a Senator to work across party lines in a bipartisan fashion."

Day 4: What is Dick Black Hiding from Voters?
VCDL Gun Survey Advocates Extreme Positions
10/24/2011
Ashburn, VA - It has been 4 days since Shawn Mitchell challenged career politician Dick Black to release his answers to the extreme Virginia Citizens Defense League survey but the former Delegate is continuing to hide his responses.
"Career politician Dick Black's to-do list is growing," said Mitchell Campaign Manager Dominic Gabello. "He still has yet to publically apologize to Shawn for smearing his good name with outright lies and falsehoods. Now voters are still waiting to see where he stands on the extreme views of the Virginia Citizens Defense League - a radical group that wants to allow guns in bars, schools, libraries and do away with the Virginia State Police background check system."

Career Politician Continues to Hide His Extreme Views
10/23/2011
Ashburn, VA - It's day 3 and career politician Dick Black still hasn't released his Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) survey. Delegate Black was endorsed by the Virginia Citizens Defense League, a group that wants to allow guns in bars, schools, libraries and gut the Virginia State Police background check system.
"Why won't Delegate Black just release his VCDL survey and let voters see what his extreme views on guns are," said Mitchell Campaign Manager, Dominic Gabello. "It's typical for a career politician like Delegate Black to try and hide his extremist views from the voters. Unfortunately for him, families in Loudoun and Prince William are seeing through his smears and remembering why they fired him in 2005.

Day 2: When Will Dick Black Release the Survey
Career Politician Continues To Hide Extreme Views from the Voters
10/22/2011
Ashburn, VA - It has now been two days since Shawn Mitchell challenged career politician Dick Black to release his answers to the extreme Virginia Citizens Defense League survey and Delegate Black has failed to respond.
"What is Delegate Black hiding from the voters of the 13th Senate District," asked Mitchell campaign manager, Dominic Gabello. "Why won't he let voters know what his responses were to this extreme survey that earned him the VCDL endorsement earlier this year? Voters have a right to know about this important public safety issue and if Delegate Black supports the extreme positions of VCDL and guns in bars, schools, libraries or recreation centers, or of gutting Virginia's background check system.
"Delegate Black needs to release the survey now."

Ashburn, VA - Last night in a joint forum in the Heritage Hunt community of Prince William County, small businessman Shawn Mitchell challenged career politician Dick Black to release his answers to the extreme Virginia Citizens Defense League survey on guns. Delegate Dick Black received the VCDL endorsement earlier this year.
The VCDL is far to the right of the National Rifle Association and is well known for their opposition to all gun laws including restriction on guns in schools and colleges. They want to eliminate the background check system run by the Virginia State Police and allow people to carry concealed weapons without the current permit requirement that includes a background check and modest training requirement. VCDL members are infamous for carrying guns into the state capitol in Richmond during their lobby day and are completely out of step with the tradition of responsible gun ownership shared by most voters in the Old Dominion.

Fact Check: Dick Black Caught Lying to Voters
Career Politician's Smears Against Mitchell Are False
10/20/2011
Ashburn, VA - Career politician Dick Black's mail and TV smear campaign against small businessman Shawn Mitchell is based on falsehoods and blatant lies to the voters of the 13th district. Court records prove that Mitchell's former employer denied making the claims that Black is desperately using to smear Mitchell. The employer actually went so far as to call Mitchell a 'hero' for his business leadership skills.

Why is Dick Black Smearing Shawn Mitchell?
Career Politician Continues Cover Up on Abysmal Record on Job Creation and Protecting Public Education
10/12/2011
Ashburn - Last week, career politician Dick Black began smearing Shawn Mitchell for a lawsuit that was settled out of court with a former employer, relying on half-truths and misdirection.
In a mailer Black says, "…Mitchell settled the lawsuit, then immediately petitioned to have the records sealed and hidden." That not only isn't true, but it's actually not how our legal system in Virginia works. As a lawyer, you would expect Delegate Black to know that once a case has been settled between parties, they inform the judge and the case is dismissed. There is nothing additionally filed with the court. Any agreements between the parties, stay between the parties: the Court doesn't actually get a copy. Therefore, there is nothing that is "sealed." The pleadings in the case are open and available for inspection to the public.

ICYMI: Ashburn Resident Rejects Carpetbagging Career Politician Dick Black
09/20/2011
In a letter to the editor published today in the online version of the Leesburg Today, Ashburn resident Celeste Descoteaux made a convincing case for rejecting career politician Dick Black who has moved his family three times in five years to "chase his next career opportunity."
Descoteaux realizes what is on the line in this year's election. In endorsing Shawn Mitchell, Descoteaux, like so many residents of the 13th District, says that she wants a leader "who will actively work to solve our economic and transportation challenges instead of pursuing fringe conservative social issues."

I was serving our country in Bosnia on September 11, 2001. I remember the presidential response, the pride of being an American, and our country's desire to unite as one to fight terrorism.

08/04/2011
Broadlands resident Shawn Mitchell never planned on a career in politics. But when new Senate District 13 was created in Loudoun during redistricting, the small business owner decided it was time to step forward to represent his community.
"The district needed a strong business person. It needed a person who lives here, drives on the roads, goes to the grocery store here to represent us," Mitchell said, sitting in his Ashburn office. "I felt compelled to be that strong voice."

A Day to Celebrate and Remember
By Shawn

Friends -
While we celebrate the birth of our nation, let us all take a moment to remember those who have fought and died for our country. As a veteran who served in Iraq, I am reminded daily of the sacrifices of those who are currently serving in harms way and of those who came before us. It is that 'service above self' that inspires me everyday.
Stay safe,
Shawn
