Va. Democrats portray Dick Black as extreme for new GOP-leaning Senate district

RICHMOND — Dick Black once questioned whether a husband commits rape if he forces his wife to have sex. The former member of the House of Delegates introduced a bill to ban gays from adopting children. He voted to limit access to birth control.

But the Republican who opposes abortion rights is probably best known on Capitol Square for sending plastic pink models of fetuses to lawmakers as they prepared to vote on an abortion bill.

Shawn Mitchell, a Democrat opposing Black in next week's election for state Senate, is using Black's record to show he's extreme for even a new Republican-leaning district in Loudoun and Prince William counties.

Democrats have spent months employing a similar strategy across the state, hoping the conservative crop of Republicans running in this election gives them the edge they need to hold their thin majority in the Senate.

"Having served . . . with Dick Black, I saw up close how zealously out of touch he is with what middle-class families need,'' said Brian Moran, a former legislator who is chair of the Democratic Party of Virginia. "His obsession with divisive social issues won't create a single job, won't get a single commuter out of traffic and won't put a single teacher back in our classrooms."

Career politician Dick Black has ignored requests to participate in this debate. For the last 8 days, Black has also refused to release his answers to the extreme VCDL gun survey.

That not only isn't true, but it's actually not how our legal system in Virginia works. As a lawyer, you would expect Delegate Black to know that once a case has been settled between parties, they inform the judge and the case is dismissed. There is nothing additionally filed with the court. Any agreements between the parties, stay between the parties: the Court doesn't actually get a copy. Therefore, there is nothing that is "sealed." The pleadings in the case are open and available for inspection to the public.

Watch Shawn debate Dick Black last week at the Prince William Committee of 100. It's pretty clear from this debate that Shawn is the only candidate in this race who gets it and will go to Richmond to help us create jobs and finally work to solve our transportation crisis that is decreasing our quality of life.

Ashburn - Shawn Mitchell, the Democratic nominee for the new 13th District state senate seat released the following statement after former Delegate Dick Black won the Republican primary tonight according to the results on the Virginia State Board of Elections website.

Broadlands resident Shawn Mitchell never planned on a career in politics. But when new Senate District 13 was created in Loudoun during redistricting, the small business owner decided it was time to step forward to represent his community.

"The district needed a strong business person. It needed a person who lives here, drives on the roads, goes to the grocery store here to represent us," Mitchell said, sitting in his Ashburn office. "I felt compelled to be that strong voice."

Everyone has days that have significant importance to them. August 1st is one of those days for me.

As we conclude our Ears and Cheers weekend, I am humbled by the number of people who gave up their time to support Mark Herring and myself.

Ashburn - The Shawn Mitchell for State Senate campaign today announced their June 30th end of quarter fundraising total. Mitchell, a Democrat and first time candidate, is running for the open 13th Senate District seat.

As I have set out on this political campaign, I had not realized I would be learning a foreign language as well. Every action has a verbiage, for example, we don't go and knock on doors to meet residents, we go to "knock doors."

The campaign is moving forward nicely. We have our campaign manager, finance manager, and field director in place. Our first few days of fundraising finished up nicely.

While we celebrate the birth of our nation, let us all take a moment to remember those who have fought and died for our country. As a veteran who served in Iraq, I am reminded daily of the sacrifices of those who are currently serving in harms way and of those who came before us. It is that 'service above self' that inspires me everyday.

I am late to the game in getting this out, as we are a few weeks into the campaign. I did however want to catch you up. The temporary campaign office is up and running and so is the website and facebook and twitter. We have been knocking on doors and talking with voters.

I not only have my own family to feed, but that of all my employees. That's the kind of leadership experience I want to bring to Richmond."
